Hari/tanggal: Senin, 1 Juli 2013
Waktu: 09.30 – 12.00
Tempat: Auditorium Gedung H, Fakultas Psikologi UI, Kampus UI Depok
Pembicara: Winter Mason, Peneliti di Facebook Data Science Team dan The Center for Decision Technologies – Stevens Institute of Technology, USA.
In this talk I will present highlights of three research projects focused on understanding social dynamics—including real and perceived attitude homophily in Facebook, the effect of network structure on collective search, and the effect of friendship on success in an online gaming platform—followed by a deep dive on a study of the emergence of social conventions on Twitter. In this study, we leveraged the widespread use of Twitter and focused on competing variations of the convention for attributing reposts to the original source. Our data contains nearly all tweets starting with the very first tweet in 2006 up to September 2009, which allowed us to observe how the conventions emerged and spread through the network of Twitter users. We observe that initially the most successful conventions were borrowed from natural language (“via” and “retweeting”), but eventually a community-specific convention came to dominate (“RT”). Our results suggest that there are some features that encourage the adoption of one convention over another, but that there is still significant inherent unpredictability in which convention will come to dominate. I will end the talk by previewing some ongoing research and discussing potential future research directions.
